Surviving the Night

The Survivors

The Survivors

Thank you Gary Paulsen for igniting a love of reading in my boys.  Reading Hatchet, The River, Brian’s Winter, Brian’s Return, & Brian’s Hunt, has inspired them to be survivors of our woods.

For weeks these boys have been planning a night of survival with NO PARENTS! NO HELP!  Just the four of them on their own.  Making lists of things they needed to survive & thinking about how they were going to set up camp was in their thoughts.  They had their blinders on no doubt.

The night finally came!  Running in from school they started packing up their goods & necessities.  Hot dogs, baked beans, & of course cookies, pan, lifter, pam, (cousins were bringing soup & dishes) hatchets, knives, flashlights, sleeping bags & I’m not sure what else.  Breakfast was farm fresh eggs from their cousins chicken barn.  They had a plan.

After dinner, Carissa & I thought we should check on them…and take pictures.  Of course, that’s what moms do.  Sorry boys.  You will enjoy these pictures when it’s all said and done.

They made a fire pit by digging a hole and putting rocks around it.  They were gathering sticks & twigs & chopping when we pulled up.  Looks like they all had specific jobs.  Too funny.

Their tent. All 4 slept in this small tent.

Sometime during their set up, Jeff, Steve’s brother, went to see if he could help them get their fire going…he was farming right next to them.  Cole was really wanting to do this ALL by themselves.  NO GROWNUPS.  So he kindly said “you can go now Uncle Jeff…”  He is so funny.  He makes me laugh.  “NO” to the extra blankets offered a little later by Aunt Carissa.  Ok Ok boys we get the hint.  :)

Morning came!!! They did it.  On their own.  No help.  Great job boys.  Carson made them scrambled eggs & Cole heated up the beans over the fire for breakfast.

When they got home, I asked what their favorite part was…unanimously ” setting up camp & breakfast.”

Jack, Carson, & Cole. Cade missed the pic but they did it.

These guys are ALL BOY .  I love that they are always looking for the next adventure.  I love that they have each other as brothers & I love that they have their cousins right down the street.  So blessed with these boys.  Every last one of them.

This is so cool! Such a wonder look into the full, fun, independent life you giving your children. Made me smile so much! My son would love to be a tag a long on such an incredible adventure. Just so special, well done!!

Thanks Kelly! It’s not without worry that is for sure. I have come sooo far in being able to let them grow up a little & not hover so much or be so controlling (because of worry).
